About the Work

Kalittokai is an anthology of poems in kali metre. There are 150 verses including invocation to Lord Shiva. The verses are grouped according to the fivefold tiṇai scheme: 35 verses are on the pālai theme composed by Peruṅkaṭuṅkō, 29 on kuṟiñci by Kapilar, 35 on marutam by Marutaṉ Iḷanākaṉār, 17 on mullai by Cōḻaṉ Nalluruttiraṉār and 33 on neytal by Nallantuvaṉār. In this anthology, there are verses structured in a dramatic manner. Nacciṉārkkiṉiyar, the famed commentator, has authored a brilliant commentary on Kalittokai, which has come down to us in full. It is only akam anthology which has verses on Kaikkiḷai (unrequited love) and Peruntiṇai (abnormal love) love behaviour. Besides most of the verses have the four structural constituents, namely, taravu (strope), tāḻicai (antistrope), taṉiccol (detached word) and curitakam (epode).
