About Pattuppāṭṭu - Maturaikkāñci
Maturaikkāñci is one of the Ten Idylls. Written by Māṅkuṭi Marutaṉār, this is the longest poem with 782 lines. The protagonist celebrated in this poem is Neṭuñceḻiyaṉ, a Pandya king. The ancient city of Madurai in all its glory is described in this work. The theme of kāñci runs through the work that plays out the transient nature of human life and the need to tread the path of righteousness.
The poet is a keen observer and his minute description of the people and the city of Madurai testifies to this. This poem is composed in akaval and vañci metres. The poet ends this work with a ‘good counsel’ to the king advising him to seek out happiness through this life.
