About Pattuppāṭṭu - paṭṭiṉappālai
Paṭṭiṉappālai was composed by Kaṭiyalūr Uruttiraṅkaṇṇaṉār. The Chola king Karikālaṉ and his capital Kāvirippūmpaṭṭiṉam form the focus of the poem, and the hero’s separation from the heroine which is the defining theme of pālaittiṇai is the theme proper of this work. But of the total 301 lines, only five lines are devoted to express the akam theme clearly. After a lengthy description of the great city, its forts, lakes, groves, the seaport, monasteries and the inhabitants come alive through absorbing pen-pictures. About 80 lines are devoted to the description of the king’s greatness and heroism. This poem is composed in āciriyam metre. It is said that the poet received 160 million gold coins from Karikālaṉ as a token of his appreciation.
