About Pattuppāṭṭu - Malaipaṭukaṭām
Malaipaṭukaṭām is the work of Iraṇiya Muṭṭattup Peruṅkuṉṟūrp Peruṅkaucikaṉār. The significance of this title meaning ‘the secretion oozing out from a hill’ or ‘the sound emanating from the mountains’ is not clear. With 583 lines, Malaipaṭukaṭām is the second longest Sangam poem. It also bears the name Kūttarāṟṟuppaṭai or the song that guides a dancing minstrel to a benevolent patron, who is Palkuṉṟak Kōṭṭattu Ceṅkaṇ Māttuvēḷ Naṉṉaṉ Cēy Naṉṉaṉ.
The mountain scenery described in this work testifies to the imagination and skill of the poet. Description of various musical instruments, especially the yāḻ, needs particular mention. This song is composed in āciriyam metre.
