Kuṟuntokai

About Ettuthokai-Kuṟuntokai

It is an anthology of short verses, each of which runs between 4 to 8 metrical lines of āciriyam metre. However, as an exception, verses 307 and 391 have 9 metrical lines. It is said to have been compiled first among the eight anthologies.

This anthology comprises 402 verses including an invocatory verse on Lord Murukaṉ by Peruntēvaṉār, the author of Pāratam. This anthology was compiled by Pūrikkō. There are 205 poets represented here. There was an ancient commentary on the work by the well known commentator Pērāciriyar for 380 verses. Nacciṉārkkiṉiyar completed it for the remaining 20 verses. However, both the commentaries are now lost. Kuṟuntokai was first published in 1915 by Tirukkaṇṇapurattalattāṉ Cauripperumāḷ Araṅkaṉ.
