Muttoḷḷāyiram

About Muttoḷḷāyiram (Literature)

Muttoḷḷāyiram, as the title goes, is supposed to have contained nine hundred quatrains each on the Chera, Chola and Pandya kings, 2700 verses in all. It is of unknown authorship. Only 108 quatrains are now extant.

Though the work is basically of a puṟam kind, there are exquisite love poems in Muttoḷḷāyiram. The three capital cities of the Tamil kings, their valour and munificence are described in detail. The verses are in veṇpā metre. Names of the individual king are not mentioned, but their clans are. Muttoḷḷāyiram can be set to be the origin and source of ulā literary genre in Tamil
