About Ettuthokai-Patiṟṟuppattu
Patiṟṟuppattu meaning ‘ten tens’ is an Eṭṭuttokai anthology dealing with puṟam theme. This composition contains 100 verses, divided into ten sections of ten verses each composed by a different poet. Each section celebrates the heroic deeds and achievents of a particular Chera king. As such, it is a historically and culturally important literary document of classical Tamil. Controlled expressions, profuse imagery make this a fine work of literature.
The first and last ‘tens’ are not extant. The second ten is on Imayavarampaṉ Neṭuñcēralātaṉ by poet kumaṭṭūrk kaṇṇaṉār, the third is on Palyāṉaic Celkeḻu Kuṭṭuvaṉ by Pālaik Kautamaṉār, fourth on Kaḷaṅkāyk Kaṇṇi Nārmuṭic Cēral by Kāppiyāṟṟuk Kāppiyaṉār, the fifth on Kaṭal Piṟakkōṭṭiya Ceṅkuṭṭuvaṉ by Paraṇar, the sixth on Āṭukōṭpāṭṭuc Cēralātaṉ by Kākkaipāṭiṉiyār, the seventh on Celvak Kaṭuṅkō Vāḻiyātaṉ by Kapilar, the eighth on Takaṭūr Eṟinta Peruñcēral Irumpoṟai by Aricil Kiḻār and the ninth on Iḷañcēral Irumpoṟai by Peruṅkuṉṟūrk Kiḻār.
Each group of ten is named after a catchy phrase extracted from it. The patikams (prologue), which were written many centuries later, furnish us with details about the author, the protagonist, his lineage, etc. The verses are in āciriyam metre. An old commentary on this anthology is also extant. This book is a source text for the historian of the Chera dynasty.
