About Ettuthokai-Paripāṭal
The other name of this anthology is Paripāṭṭu. Paripāṭal is named after a metre. Originally containing seventy verses, the texts available now do not have more than 24 verses. About 46 of them lost. The length of each verses varies from 32 to 140 lines. Thirteen poets such as Āciriyaṉ Nallantuvaṉār, Iḷamperuvaḻutiyār and Kaṭuvaṉ Iḷaveyiṉaṉār have contributed to this anthology. Ten musicians such as Nannākaṉār and Nallaccutaṉār have composed music to these songs.
The songs were meant to be recited to the accompaniment of musical instruments. The available texts contain eight songs on Murukaṉ, six on Tirumāl and eight on the river Vaigai. It is said that there are 24 songs in it, including the two songs found in Puṟattiraṭṭu. The colophon mentions the author of the verse and the musician who set it to music. Part of a commentary attributed to the celebrated commentator Parimēlaḻakar is also extant.
