About the Book:- |
In 1984, Burrow and Emeneau published the second edition of A Dravidian Etymological Dictionary (abbreviated DEDR), which served as a crucial reference work for Dravidianists and scholars interested in Indian linguistics. The first edition was released in 1961, and two supplements were issued in 1968 and 1972. With a total of 5569 groups of words of Dravidian origin, the dictionary also includes an Appendix of 61 groups consisting of items of Indo-Aryan or other non-Dravidian origins. The present volume acts as a supplement to the original work, providing additional features and information. One notable addition is the inclusion of elaborate rules for the development of each proto sound in the daughter languages, based on the current state of knowledge. This expands upon the original work's limited table of phonetic correspondences for Proto-Dravidian sounds. The rules are derived from Subrahmanyam's research in 2008, ensuring that the volume incorporates the latest findings. This supplementary volume focuses on adding vocabulary items to the existing material in DEDR. The additions primarily come from five non-literary languages: Irula, Kurumba, Badaga, Manda, and Malto. The sources for these additions were published after 1984, ensuring that the volume includes the most up-to-date information. The words provided in each entry fall into two categories: those that are to be added to the original work and those that were already present but now come with additional morphological, semantic, and other information. This additional information includes details such as the plural form, oblique base, past and non-past stems, and the word's status as a loan, where applicable. |
