About the Book:- |
The Akananuru, also known as the Nețuntokai, is part of the Ețțuttokai, a collection of eight anthologies. Comprising 401 verses, including an invocatory song to Lord Shiva, it spans 7185 lines. Authored by 144 poets, with three poems by anonymous writers, the verses range from 13 to 31 lines. Noteworthy for its detailed exploration of subjects, episodes, and contexts, the collection holds historical significance, according to Tamil literature scholar Kamil Zvelebil. Tradition attributes its compilation to Uruttiracanman. son of Uppürikuți Kilar of Madurai. Paņțiyan Kāņappēreyil Kațanta Ukkirap Peruvaluti. a poet of the era, patronized the work. A notable aspect is that 18 contributors hailed from Maturai, underscoring the city's role as the Tamil Academy's seat. The Akananuru not only captures the intricacies of individual emotions and love but also serves as a vibrant tapestry depicting the day-to-day life of diverse sections within Tamil society. The poets delve into the minutiae of customs, manners, beliefs, religious rituals, festivals, art forms, musical instruments, crafts, clothing, ornaments, games, and various elements that constitute the rich cultural and civilizational landscape of the time. Through the verses, readers are transported into the heart of Tamil life, gaining profound insights into the social fabric and cultural practices that shaped daily existence. The anthology, therefore, emerges as a remarkable repository of information, offering a realistic portrayal of the social, political, economic, religious, ethical, and cultural phenomena of the Tamils during its era. In essence, the Akananüru stands as a treasure trove, not only as a poetic masterpiece but also as a historical and cultural document that illuminates the diverse and vibrant heritage of the Tamil people. Its verses provide a timeless window into the multifaceted aspects of life, making it an invaluable source for understanding the depth and richness of Tamil society. |
