About the Book:- |
The Central Institute of Classical Tamil has undertaken the onerous task of getting forty-one ancient Tamil Classics translated into English and other Western and Indian languages as these immortal works reflect the sweetness of Tamil, its strength, its uniqueness, its heritage, its richness, and its grandeur. The Patirruppattu (meaning 'ten tens'), a collection of ten poems of ten stanzas each, is among the eight anthologies included in the celebrated Ețțuttokai. It glorifies ten Cëra kings on whom ten poets have composed ten poems of considerable merit. Unfortunately, only eight of these, a total of eighty pieces, are extant now. We don't know what happened to the other two, reported to be the first and last decades. The eight kings who are honoured in this volume belong to two different Cēra lines Utiyañcēral and Antuvancēral Irumporai. Though the historical importance of the work has been recognized, its literary value has been grossly underestimated. Each decad has a patikam, which is a miniature meykkirtti mentioning the names of the poet and the patron king, the time of his rule, and the honour conferred upon the poet. The chief merit of Patirruppattu consists in its being a historical document on the early Cera kings of Tamilnadu. Besides this historical value, the anthology is full of references to the habits and customs prevalent among the people and to the beliefs about the heavenly bodies and their influence on earthly institutions |
