About the Book:- |
The Central Institute of Classical Tamil has undertaken the onerous task of getting forty-one ancient Tamil Classics translated into English and other western and Indian languages as these immortal works reflect the sweetness of Tamil, its strength, its uniqueness, its heritage, its richness and its grandeur. Now we are proud to launch the Kannada translations of Ettuttokai and Pattuppāţţu, ably done by a select band of scholars led by Thiru. R. Srinivasan is associated with the reputed Bangalore Tamil Sangam. The Ainkurunūru, one of the eight Sangam anthologies known as Ettuttokai, comprises five groups of one hundred short verses, each concerned with one of the five tiņais of the akam convention and authored by one renowned for poems of that particular tiņai. They are arranged in the following order: (1) Marutam Hundred of Õrampōkiyār (2) Neytal Hundred by Ammūvanār (3) Kurinci Hundred by Kapilar (4) Pālai Hundred by Ōtalāntaiyār (5) Mullai Hundred by Pēyanar. The name of the compiler is mentioned as Pulatturai murriya Kūţalür Kilār (the Erudite Classical scholar, Kūțalūr Kilār). It is very much like the akam poems in the other Cańkam anthologies, the dramatic lyrics and monologues in Ainkurunūru are of enduring aesthetic appeal. There is psychological realism in the utterances attributed to the hero, the heroine and her confidante who, caught in varying moods, give expression to their thoughts and emotions employing choice words and measured phrases besides striking similes drawn from nature. |
