About the Book:-

The Central Institute of Classical Tamil has undertaken the onerous task of getting forty-one ancient Tamil Classics translated into English and other western and Indian languages as these immortal works reflect the sweetness of Tamil, its strength, its uniqueness, its heritage, its richness and its grandeur. Now we are proud to launch the Kannada translations of Ettuttokai and Pattuppāţţu, ably done by a select band of scholars led by Thiru. R. Srinivasan is associated with the reputed Bangalore Tamil Sangam. The Paripāțal, commonly believed to belong to the post- Cańkam period, contains twenty-four poems by diverse hands, the length of each varying from 32 to 140 lines. The poems on Murukan and Tirumal are, according to A.K. Ramanujan, "the earliest bhakti poems in India, the earliest religious poems in a mother tongue". The eleventh poem of Paripāțal, by one Nallantuvanār, describes the positions of the planets on the day when the river Vaiyai was in flood but the astrological references have been interpreted by scholars in different ways. Such passages indicate that the ancient Tamils must have had a remarkable knowledge of the universe as well as of mankind and nature. Since their hymns were meant for the common people, the Paripāțal, poets use contemporary colloquial expressions such as āmām, ēca, vārum, Kațuppu and ōţţai which might have been used only in spoken Tamil of their time.
