The Cankam anthology called as Pattuppāțțu consists of five ārruppatais (Tirumurukärruppatai, Porunarārruppatai, Cirupāņārruppatai, Perumpāņārruppatai, Kūttarārruppatai), Maturaikkāñci, Mullaippattu, Pattinappālai, Nețunalvāțai and Kurincippātțu. An arruppatai is a guide poem in which an artist, having received enormous gifts from a patron of arts, meets a fellow artist on his way back and sends him to the same patron describing the way to the chieftain's capital, the city, the greatness of the patron, the splendid feast give by him, the hospitality extended, the valuable presents and the painful leave-taking. Porunarārruppațai has a dramatic actor as an extremely affable guide, Cirupāņārruppatai, a musician with a seven-stringed harp, Perumpāņārruppatai, a musician with a fourteen-stringed harp and Malaipatukațām also known as Kūttarārruppatai, a dancer. |
